Your Photographer
Hi there!
Let me introduce myself to start the happy process of breaking the ice and making the photographic work more human.
My name is Cyrus Salvia, I was born in Brussels, Belgium, son of two passionate photographers. My mom adventuring herself in abandoned hospitals and houses to shoot the mystic, composing specific family shots in a"Mere, fille" (mother, daughter) series, taking artsy pictures of musicians for their album covers while my dad was doing reporting photography in the streets of the grey Brussels, stealing "social" shots in subways, flea markets or violent protests; now shooting graceful still life in his peaceful backyard.
After studying photography and being surrounded for years with an intense artistic background at 18 I attended a well reputed cinema school where I learned the art of cinematography and had a first taste at directing my subjects.
The wild winds of life and many travels eventually led me to NYC, where I randomly treated myself to some acting class "for fun". Very quickly it became my main source of interest, the character work and the power of the imagination really got to me. I dedicated myself to it for a few years and the issue of getting headshots came along so I started doing some for my friends, in the process I learned about the industry standards for headshots (that so many photographers overlook, getting you a good facebook profile picture instead of a professional headshot), talked to casting directors, directors, working actors and other photographers. I became a big fan of Peter Hurley and learned a lot from his technique.
My friends' shots ended up getting great feedbacks, got them auditions and gigs too. So a year ago I started renting a studio space and became serious about doing headshot photography. That same period I went back to directing movies and made my first non-student film and it won the Metropolitan Film Festival of New York in the narrative short section in June!
Now I realize that by doing headshots I discovered a real passion, merging the visual enthusiasm of creating pictures and the eagerness of directing and working with people's imaginations; but also finding a deeper meaning, being an traveler again, exploring the depth of uniqueness that each person has, that uniqueness that subtly lights up a face and makes you look like yourself, to me this is the real beauty.
